Infinite
Infinite is a contemplation of water as both a symbolic emotional state and a physical element. The imagery places greater emphasis on visual sensation than realistic depiction, creating an embodied response to the water. Removing the horizon line amplifies the infinite space, forming an expanse that plays with our sense of the micro and macro, challenging us to reflect on our relationship with the presence or absence of boundaries.
Like water, mothering has fluid edges with no end - it is infinite. It is not something you can plan for, you can only embrace the moment. Two years ago my husband and I made the difficult decision to send our teenager away to a therapeutic boarding school. He had been struggling with mental health issues that made it impossible to keep him safe in our home. I vacillated between hope and despair, courage and fear, fortitude and immobilization. For all the challenges, this experience taught me the power of change, and shaped me into a more empathetic and flexible individual. My transgender son’s strength to endure hardship in his journey is an inspiration to me.
Water, and life, are constantly in motion; dynamic, unstable, rapid. Utilizing a fast shutter speed, I capitalize on the camera’s innate capabilities to slow down and see - to take the time to examine in detail. It echoes my experience of standing at the edge; perceiving the flow as a meditation, creating space for much needed peace. Capturing a fleeting and invisible moment reveals a spontaneous formation that can never be repeated. A mystery that is hidden right in front of us is exposed.
Infinite is site for reflection.
